Media Centre

The Media Centre is a large collaborative hub, run by students under guidance from staff. Like an industry media centre, students use the facility to collaborate on live briefs, stories and assignments for real products and clients, and design, write, record, edit, research and interview to create high quality, industry-standard media. All communication studies students use the Media Centre as a core part of their studies.

The Media Centre includes:

  • An editor’s hub
  • News studios
  • Recording and podcasting spaces
  • Digital media and edit suites
  • Two large mobile smart TVs used for teaching and media viewing
  • Audio-visual recording booths
  • Interview rooms
  • Networked computers
  • International news feeds

News studios

The Media Centre houses two main news studios equipped with professional-grade technology. The studios share a small control room and are used for teaching, industry collaboration and real-world media projects.

News booth

The news booth is a small broadcast-style studio equipped with two professional cameras, a green screen and a backdrop of our student newsroom.

It is used mainly by journalism students for:

  • Simulated and live broadcasts
  • In-studio performance training
  • Video interviews
  • Pieces to camera

Audio booth

The audio booth is a soundproofed, two-person studio with professional microphones.

This space is used for:

  • Interviews
  • Podcasts
  • Projects that require a soundproof recording environment

Industry partnerships

The Media Centre actively collaborates with organisations like TVNZ and Radio NZ, providing students with unique opportunities to contribute to live broadcasts and professional media projects. Recent partnerships include:

  • TVNZ’s Breakfast show, where journalism students produced video stories and participated in live national broadcasts
  • Radio NZ’s Mediawatch team using our facilities to conduct interviews during AUT’s climate-journalism symposium
