Peter Shimwell

Director, Student Counselling & Health

Peter Shimwell first encountered AUT from the outside – through a Big Sleep Out hosted on campus that left a lasting impression on him. When the chance came to lead AUT's student counselling and mental health services in 2022, he didn't hesitate. Four years on, he's still moved by what he sees every day.

Every day, I see staff across the university go above and beyond for students. The level of care and commitment is inspiring.

What’s your role and how long have you been at AUT?

I joined AUT in 2022 as director of Student Counselling & Health. Before joining AUT, I held a range of senior leadership roles supporting tamariki, rangatahi and whānau across health, education, community and social services, both in Aotearoa New Zealand and the United Kingdom.

What made you choose AUT – and what made you stay?

My first connection with AUT was while working for the charity Lifewise, when AUT hosted The Big Sleep Out to raise awareness and support for people experiencing homelessness. I was impressed by the professionalism, generosity and genuine commitment of AUT staff, both during the event and in their wider engagement with the community.

When the opportunity arose to lead AUT's student counselling and mental health services, I jumped at the chance to join the AUT whānau. What has kept me here is the opportunity to continue developing wellbeing services that make a real difference to students' lives, while working alongside passionate and supportive colleagues who share that purpose.

What has surprised you most about working here?

I’ve been continually impressed by how far AUT goes to support students to succeed, particularly when they are navigating significant life challenges. Every day, I see staff across the university go above and beyond for students facing hardship, health concerns, bereavement, family pressures and other personal challenges. The level of care, collaboration and commitment is inspiring, and I'm proud to be part of an organisation that invests so strongly in the wellbeing and success of its students.

When did you last think: this is why I do this job?

At a recent AUT LIVE event, I was part of a student support services panel discussion when a grandparent unexpectedly stood up and addressed the audience. She spoke about the difference AUT's support services had made to two of her grandchildren and a niece during difficult periods in their studies. Hearing her share such heartfelt feedback, and seeing the audience respond with spontaneous applause, was a powerful reminder of the impact our work can have. It was one of those moments when I thought, "This is exactly why I do this job”.

What does working here let you do that you couldn’t do anywhere else?

Working at AUT has provided opportunities for both personal and professional growth. I've been able to expand my community partnerships, collaborate with colleagues across universities in New Zealand and Australia, and continue my own postgraduate study while developing my leadership and professional skills.

What makes AUT special is its people. It's a place where talented, committed individuals come together in a supportive learning environment, united by a shared goal of helping students succeed and creating better futures for our communities.
