Jacqui Brabant
Manager – Operations Support
Health and Environmental Sciences
Jacqui Brabant joined AUT's Sport & Fitness Centre in 2015 and spent a decade there before recently moving into a faculty-wide operations role in the Faculty of Health and Environmental Sciences. What's kept her here isn't the work itself, but the people – watching colleagues and students go on to achieve amazing things.

What’s your role and how long have you been at AUT?
I’m currently the manager of operations support in the Faculty of Health and Environmental Sciences. I recently moved into this role after spending the past 10 years as the manager of the AUT North Campus Sport & Fitness Centre.
What made you choose AUT – and what made you stay?
I first discovered AUT in 2008 after completing a Bachelor of Science in Nutrition and Sport at Massey University. Looking for a more practical, industry-focused experience, I enrolled in AUT's Personal Training short course. I immediately loved the vibe of the university and its approach to teaching and learning. After that experience, I kept an eye on AUT's careers site and was thrilled to join the Sport & Fitness Centre in 2015. The people are what has kept me here. There's a strong culture of support and whanaungatanga, and throughout my career here I've built relationships that have made AUT feel much more than just a workplace.
What has surprised you most about working here?
I’ve been pleasantly surprised by how connected AUT is to its communities and industry partners. The opportunities students have to engage with the workforce early in their studies are incredibly valuable and help set them up for success. I've also been impressed by how open people are to sharing knowledge and expertise. There is a real willingness to learn from one another, and that creates an environment where great ideas and meaningful partnerships can thrive.
When did you last think: this is why I do this job?
Recently, as I transitioned into my new role, I found myself reflecting on the many staff and students I've worked alongside over the years. Looking back on where some of them started and seeing what they've gone on to achieve has been a highlight. It's a reminder of the positive impact we can have through the relationships we build and the support we provide along the way.
What does working here let you do that you couldn’t do anywhere else?
AUT has given me opportunities to learn, grow and take on new challenges throughout my career. Moving from leading a Sport & Fitness Centre into a faculty-wide operations position is a great example of the pathways available.
What I value most is being able to contribute to positive change. AUT encourages people to share ideas and continuously improve how we do things. Helping enhance experiences for staff and students has been particularly rewarding.
