Associate Professor Adrian Schoone spent decades in education before AUT – teaching in primary schools, leading as a principal, working in the NGO space. He joined in 2016 looking for the next chapter. What he found was a place that backed his growth and gave him a genuine stake in where the university is heading.

What’s your role and how long have you been at AUT?

I am the head of the School of Education Te Kura Mātauranga and an associate professor. I commenced my employment at AUT in mid-2016 after a long career in education as a primary school teacher, principal and NGO education leader.

What made you choose AUT – and what made you stay?

Having completed my doctorate, I was looking for the next step in my education journey. I had given a guest lecture at AUT, and was impressed with the friendly staff I met and by how engaged the teacher education students were. When a vacancy was advertised, I applied and I haven't looked back since. AUT has supported my growth as a researcher of alternative education, given me room to lecture in my areas of expertise, and provided opportunities to develop as an education leader. It is a young and agile university, and I feel like we all help shape its direction.

What has surprised you most about working here?

AUT is full of wonderful teams that keep the main thing the main thing. I really appreciate the can-do and collaborative attitude.

When did you last think: this is why I do this job?

At graduation! Seeing our education students walk across the stage – for many, they’re about to launch into their careers as teachers, researchers, community kaimahi and policy influencers. It gives me a great sense of satisfaction.

What does working here let you do that you couldn’t do anywhere else?

AUT for me, has brought together my passions for teaching, research and leadership, while giving me opportunities to grow and have an impact in all three. For this, I am truly grateful.
