Māori medium teachers use te reo Māori, tikanga Māori and mātauranga Māori through kaupapa Māori to lead the spiritual, cultural, mental, relational and physical development of ākonga.

Typical tasks

  • Build and maintain respectful relationships with whānau and the community to support the ākonga achievement
  • Plan and develop a range of learning activities, techniques and resources to support the schools’ education programme and the learning styles of ākonga
  • Support the spiritual, mental, relational and physical development of the ākonga through learning activities
  • Teach in te reo Māori and apply tikanga Māori
  • Teach people cultural activities like karakia, waiata, mihimihi and kapa haka to support the schools education programme
  • Assess ākonga abilities and interests to plan to their needs
  • Monitor learning activities and record development of ākonga progress and achievements
  • Understand and support the school’s values and systems
  • Continue to grow knowledge and skills in teaching practices and resources
