Emergency medical technicians (EMTs) respond to medical emergencies and provide care and transport for sick or injured people.

Work environment

  • Usually work long shifts, including nights and weekends and may work part time
  • Usually work in ambulances, air ambulances and helicopters, and travel locally and nationally
  • May work in all weather conditions

  • Need to work well under pressure, communicate well and be safety conscious

  • Monitor patient progress or responses to treatments
  • Analyse patient data to determine patient needs or treatment goals
  • Maintain medical or professional knowledge
  • Sterilise medical equipment or instruments
  • Drive vehicles to transport individuals or equipment

  • Inform medical professionals regarding patient conditions and care
  • Collaborate with health care professionals to plan or provide treatment
  • Treat medical emergencies
