Dental technicians create and repair dentures or dental appliances used to treat, replace or protect damaged, badly positioned or missing teeth.

Work environment

  • Usually work regular business hours, but may work evenings and weekends
  • Usually work in dental laboratories
  • Need to be organised and methodical

Typical tasks

  • Read work orders or other instructions to determine product specifications or materials requirements
  • Apply parting agents or other solutions to moulds
  • Inspect medical or dental assistive devices
  • Mix ingredients to create specific finishes
  • Place materials into moulds
  • Melt metal, plastic, or other materials to prepare for production
  • Cast moulds of patient anatomies to create medical or dental devices
  • Prepare materials for processing
  • Measure clients to ensure proper product fit
  • Load items into ovens or furnaces
