Anaesthetic technicians get patients and equipment ready for an anaesthetic procedure, and assist anaesthetists before, during and after an operation.

Work environment

  • Usually work shifts, including nights and weekends and may be on call
  • Usually work in operating rooms, hospitals, clinics, delivery suites and emergency departments
  • Need to be methodical, accurate and work well under pressure

Typical tasks

  • Set up life support and anaesthetic machines
  • Help place breathing tubes and IV lines
  • Assist with giving anaesthetics and blocks
  • Monitor patient heartbeats and vital signs
  • Talk to patients and check for risks
  • Help with patient care
  • Insert catheters
  • Sterilise or dispose of used equipment
