Sophie Bourne

Infant Teacher, Greenlane Childcare Centre
Master of Education student
Bachelor of Education (Early Childhood Teaching)
She came to AUT because she wanted a university experience centred around the practical side of her career, says Sophie Bourne who studied a Bachelor of Education (Early Childhood Teaching) and is now enrolled in the Master of Education.
“I feel that there are some things you learn best on the floor. What I loved most about the Bachelor of Education (Early Childhood Teaching) was the amount of teaching practicums we had and how practical the theory side was. I feel that it has prepared me very well for my career as a new graduate.”
Deciding to study early childhood education was easy for her.
“I’ve always loved working with young children and am extremely passionate about providing quality care and education for our youngest tamariki.”
A drive for leadership
While she had many highlights during her bachelor’s degree, receiving a summer scholarship towards the end of her final year is an achievement she is particularly proud of.
“In December 2024, I received a Summer Research Award that financially supported me in my master’s degree. It also gave me the opportunity to write a research paper alongside two very valued members of the early childhood education sector.”
Currently working at Greenlane Childcare Centre in addition to doing postgraduate study, she says her goal is to work towards a leadership position in the early childhood education sector, and she believes enrolling in the Master of Education will support her in that ambition.
“I was seeking more knowledge about the field of early childhood education, particularly about infant learning and leadership roles, so decided to enrol in the Master of Education, specialising in educational leadership.”
Advice for other students
Expecting to complete her Master of Education in 2026, Sophie has some great advice for other university students.
“Time can be your best friend, or your worst enemy. Bite the bullet and start things early – you’ll thank yourself in the long run.”
She wouldn’t hesitate to recommend AUT’s education programmes to other students.
“I feel very strongly that both the Bachelor of Education (Early Childhood Teaching) and the Master of Education are supporting me in my career as an early childhood teacher. I also appreciated how extremely empathetic and supportive AUT was when I lost three family members during my studies, giving me some extra time to be with my family before returning to assignment work.”
