Jacey Sison

3rd-year student, Bachelor of Health Science (Nursing)

She has always had a passion for nursing, says Jacey Sison who is in the final year of her Bachelor of Health Science (Nursing).

“As a child, whenever someone asked me the classic question ‘What do you want to be when you grow up?’, my answer was always ‘A nurse’. From a young age, I had a strong sense of responsibility and care for others. I loved looking after younger children, which I frequently did during my parents’ church group activities and functions that I attended. This nurturing instinct grew even more when my little sister was born. Over the years, my passion for nursing has only deepened as I’ve come to understand the profound impact nurses have on people’s lives. It has become clear to me that nursing is not just a profession, but a calling – one that allows me to blend my compassion with the skills necessary to make a real difference in the lives of those in need.”

Now well on her way towards becoming a nurse, she says she is grateful to be awarded a Southern Cross Nursing Scholarship to help her turn that childhood dream into reality.

“The scholarship has been invaluable in easing my financial burdens, particularly during clinical placements where I face additional costs like transport, uniforms and meals. With this financial relief, I’m able to focus more on my studies and clinical training, which are critical for my future career in nursing. However, beyond the financial support, the mentoring programmes and priority placements have been incredibly beneficial.

“I’m grateful for the opportunities to connect with experienced mentors who guide and support my growth. The priority placements have been a significant help, as I know I’m in good hands and have the chance to learn from some of the best in the field. This comprehensive support has allowed me to develop both professionally and personally, furthering my nursing journey.”

A sense of community
Studying at AUT has been an incredible experience, Jacey says.

“The practical, hands-on approach to learning means that I’m not just reading about nursing; I’m doing it. Whether it's through hands-on practice in clinical placements or working on projects that directly relate to patient care, I find it rewarding to see how theory translates into meaningful action. It’s not just about gaining knowledge; it’s about using that knowledge to make a real difference in people's lives.”

The sense of community at AUT is what she is enjoying most about student life at AUT.

“The connections I’ve made with both my lecturers and peers have made the journey more enjoyable, providing a strong support system and shared sense of purpose. The support from lecturers who genuinely care about our success has made a huge difference, and the sense of community here is unmatched. The friends I’ve met here are truly lifelong connections, and that’s something I value deeply. Being surrounded by likeminded people who are just as passionate about learning and helping others has been motivating and inspiring.”

Advice for other students
Expecting to graduate later this year, Jacey has some great advice for other students who are thinking about a future in nursing.

“My advice would be to stay true to your passion and not to be afraid to ask for help when you need it. Nursing can be tough, especially with the balancing act of study, placements and life, but remember that it’s okay to feel overwhelmed sometimes. Lean on your peers, reach out to your lecturers and clinical educators, and take care of your mental health. It’s important to take breaks and not burn yourself out.

“Embrace the hands-on learning opportunities and make the most of every clinical placement - each one is a chance to grow and gain confidence. And most importantly, keep your focus on why you started this journey: to help people. That motivation will always guide you through.”

She wouldn’t hesitate to recommend studying at AUT to others.

“The practical approach to learning has been one of the most valuable aspects for me. From hands on clinical placements to interactive lectures and labs, the university really prepares you for real world practice. The support from staff is exceptional, and I’ve always felt like my lecturers and clinical educators genuinely care about my success. The campus environment is also welcoming, with a strong sense of community, which makes it easy to connect with others and feel part of something bigger. For me, studying at AUT has not only provided me with the knowledge and skills I need but also the confidence to pursue my nursing career with passion and dedication.”
