Why I chose my host uni:

The UK had been one of my bucket list destinations, and the exchange was the perfect opportunity for me to visit the country! Also, my host university, Cardiff Met, is established in my study area. It has a strong reputation for applied, real-world learning, which aligned with the kind of hands-on, practical education I was looking for, especially in fields like tourism.

Cardiff is a vibrant, student-friendly city with a lot of history, culture and easy access to nature. It felt like a place where I could not only study, but also live and enjoy my time. I liked that it wasn’t overwhelming like a huge city, but still had everything I needed.

How I found applying to my host uni:

The AUT exchange team was amazing! The entire process was very clear, and they helped every step of the way. Because I’m an international student in New Zealand, my visa process was a bit complicated as I needed more documents than a Kiwi or a ‘strong passport’ holder. I had to apply for a visitor visa and could stay there for six months, which was amazing because I could explore more before and after my semester. The only downside was that I couldn’t work, so I had to be conscious of the money I spent. But overall, the process was quick and easy to follow.

How I found learning in a different academic system:

At first, it felt a bit overwhelming, but over time I came to really appreciate the freedom of self-directed learning. There was a strong focus on structure, referencing and building clear arguments. I had to adjust my writing style a bit to match UK expectations, but that process taught me a lot about clarity and academic writing.

Adapting to a different academic system was easier than I thought, even though the course load was more intense than in New Zealand for me. But there’s so much help available through student services, for things like referencing and feedback from lecturers who were all super friendly.

What I gained from this experience:

My exchange semester in the UK was an invaluable opportunity to develop and enhance my abilities, academic and personal. I found my field of passion in the tourism industry. I became more confident in articulating my ideas and expressing them, particularly in seminars that encouraged open dialogue and debate. The networks, skills and experiences I gained are still helping me today as I navigate my academic journey and my aspirations of becoming an emerging leader in the tourism industry.

Beyond the classroom, the exchange offered valuable networking opportunities. I was able to connect with academics, industry professionals and fellow students.

Being in a completely new place, I had to figure things out on my own – everything from setting up a bank account to cooking proper meals (or at least trying!). It gave me a real sense of confidence that I can handle whatever life throws at me. I met some amazing people I never would have crossed paths with otherwise and gained a lifelong friend! We shared experiences that brought us really close, and those memories are some of my favourites.

Top tips for other students

  1. Go to the international induction and exchange induction! You’ll meet people you can relate to and maybe you’ll find an amazing friend, like I did
  2. There are so many clubs/societies you can join, where you’ll find like-minded people, so go to them
  3. The UK has amazing student discounts and vouchers, which they hand out during the entire month of the start of the term at the fresher’s fair
  4. Research – there are so many different ways you can save money, like finding the cheapest grocery store, cheap buses to major cities around the UK or paying next to nothing by using student discounts for SIM cards
