Navigating our doctoral futuresTe Ara Whakamua
An 8-week professional development programme supporting doctoral students to build leadership skills, explore diverse career pathways and confidently plan their futures.
This programme represents a collaborative effort across the University, with facilitators contributing their expertise from nearly all faculties, AUT Ventures, and the Employability and Careers Team. Special acknowledgment to the Māori and Pacific researchers, cultural advisors, and the Moanaroa Pacific Research Network whose guidance has been vital in shaping this kaupapa.

What you'll experience
Eight weekly workshops covering foundation skills, personal empowerment, industry connections, research communication, academic pathways, technology and ethics, innovation and enterprise, and leadership development. Each session combines expert facilitation with peer learning, featuring diverse voices from nearly all AUT faculties, AUT Ventures, and the Employability and Careers Team.
You'll begin with a pōwhiri at Ngā Wai o Horotiu Marae, establishing meaningful connections and positioning yourself within Te Tiriti context. From there, you'll develop practical skills for translating your academic expertise into professional contexts, learn to communicate your research across cultural boundaries, and build the confidence to navigate whatever career path calls to you.
Guided by AUT's Te Aronui framework and grounded in Te Tiriti principles, the programme integrates Māori and Pacific perspectives, empowering you to use your specialised knowledge to make a difference in both academic and non-academic careers.

What participants say
"I wanted to let you know how valuable and insightful I found the entire series of sessions. The programme was well-structured, taking us on a journey from building a strong research community in the opening session... to reflecting on our future paths in the final workshop on cross-cultural leadership. I appreciated the holistic approach, which combined practical career skills with good discussions on wellbeing and cultural context... The programme has given me a renewed sense of confidence and direction as I navigate the final stages of my PhD."
"Thank you so much for the amazing initiative. I have learned a lot from it, and it was awesome for me to connect with other PhD students... I came out of the programme with a heart full of gratitude because: I now have friends who are walking in this doctoral journey and continue to walk with them in this journey... [and] Te Ara Whakamua is a reminder that doing a doctoral study is a humbling experience and that we students are not alone."
"Thank you for coordinating this fabulous and useful programme. I wish I had access to it at the beginning of my PhD journey, but I have nonetheless benefited greatly from the various sessions. The programme was well-coordinated and covered a wide range of topics... and the professional connections I have forged through this platform are invaluable, and I hope to continue maintaining these relationships in the future."
