The Digital Fabrication Studio gives students and researchers the space to explore current and emerging technologies in a cross-disciplinary studio environment as part of the wider level 3 fabrication facilities. We provide technical support and training on machine operation and digital fabrication services such as laser cutting, 3D printing and 3D scanning.
Our studio is part of the wider level 3 fabrication facility, which includes the 3D Fabrication Workshop and the Wet Lab. Our kaupapa is an open, encouraging and collaborative making space. Students can collaborate across multiple labs for a project, for example, creating laser-cut jigs and fixtures for wood/metal work in the 3D Fabrication Workshop or 3D-printed moulds for casting in the Wet Labs. Work created in the Digital Fabrication Workshop may be assembled, post-processed and finished in these other spaces.
The workshop can be used by students, researchers, staff and approved external partners who have completed a WM level 3 health and safety induction. We are available during scheduled workshops and open access times.
We have CAD support and fabrication file editing (Rhino, SolidWorks, AI, etc).
We have three handheld 3D scanners with 0.2mm resolution.
Our FDM 3D printer farm includes:
We have specialised printers, extruders, nozzles and filaments, giving students and researchers the opportunity to slice and use custom G-code to explore their projects. We also offer lost-wax metal casting in collaboration with the 3D Fabrication Lab.
We have Stoneflower extruders for semi-viscous fluids and a WASP 40100 LDM large-format ceramic 3D printer. You can create ceramic prints and work with other semi-viscous materials for object, spatial or architectural projects. Firing and glazing are available in collaboration with the Wet Lab.
We have a laser cutting material storage area and three CO2 laser cutters:
You can book access and training sessions, get material and file consultation, and test your designs. Vinyl cutting is available on request.
