Job application and interview process
Knowing what to expect makes for a better application – and a better interview. Here's how AUT's recruitment process works, from application through to offer.
Your application
All AUT roles are filled through our online application process. When you apply:
- Answer all the questions – we assess these before reviewing CVs (resumés) to get a picture of each applicant’s skills
- Attach your CV electronically
- Note the closing date – we usually don’t contact applicants until after this date
Once you submit, you will receive a confirmation email.
Who makes the shortlist
Our selection panel shortlists applicants who best meet the criteria for the role. If you’re not shortlisted, we’ll let you know by email. If you are, we’ll be in touch to arrange a face-to-face panel interview.
At that point, let us know if you’d like a whānau (family) interview – bringing support people with you – or if you have any special requirements like building access or adaptive equipment.
Your panel interview
Interviews at AUT are conducted by a panel – usually three to four people, including the hiring manager, sometimes more depending on the role. They run 30 minutes to an hour and may include testing, presentations or assessments.
We’ll ask about your skills and experience. Give us specific examples of situations you’ve been in and what you did – focus on your own actions rather than what the team did together.
The STAR method is a useful structure:
- Situation – the context or problem you faced (keep examples recent)
- Task – what you needed to do
- Action – what you did and why, including how you handled any challenges
- Result – what the outcome was
There will be time for your questions too. Before you leave, we let you know when you can expect to hear from us.
Referees
If you’ve reached this stage, you’re likely among our top candidates. We will ask your permission to contact at least two referees, including your current or most recent employer, ideally your direct manager.
We don’t accept written references at this stage. Ask your referees’ permission before you give us their details.
Background checks
We carry out a work eligibility check for every role. If you’ve listed a qualification, we will verify it directly with the institution.
Some roles require additional checks – medical, credit, Ministry of Justice or driver’s licence – depending on the nature of the work. Roles subject to the Vulnerable Children Act 2014 require extra vetting.
