Medical and travel insurance

All international students enrolled at Auckland University of Technology (AUT) must hold an acceptable insurance policy as a condition of their study visa for the period of enrolment until the expiry of their student visa. Your policy must meet the requirements outlined in The Education (Pastoral Care of Tertiary and International Learners) Code of Practice 2021 (the Code). Read more about the Code of Practice.

AUT has appointed insurance brokers Marsh Limited to manage our Studentsafe Inbound University policy, which is insured by Allianz. You are automatically registered under the Studentsafe Inbound University policy by Allianz Partners when you accept your offer. This is the University’s preferred insurance policy and provider. You do not need to apply for this insurance plan.

Full-year students pay an annual premium, and part-year students pay a proportion of the annual premium.

The premium is paid to AUT and it may change from year to year.

Cost for Studentsafe insurance (annual premium for 2026)

  • Student insurance: NZD $899.00
  • Family insurance: NZD $2247.50 (includes student, spouse and dependent children)
    • 6-month family insurance: NZD $1798.00
  • Couple rate: NZD $1798.00 (includes student and spouse or child)

The Studentsafe Inbound University policy does not automatically cover pre-existing medical conditions. A pre-existing medical condition is a medical or physical condition that you had before you enrolled in the plan and can extend to pre-existing medical condition(s) (asthma, ADHD, etc) you were aware of but did not seek treatment for.

Cover can be arranged in certain circumstances by completing a medical assessment form. An additional premium will be charged if approved by Studentsafe.

You can apply for cover for your spouse and any dependent children who are travelling with you to New Zealand for the duration of your study under the Studentsafe Inbound University policy.

The family policy must start at the same time as your policy.

To apply for family insurance:

  • Download and complete the Family Application Form. This form needs to be submitted each time you want to purchase additional periods of cover for any current and subsequent enrolment periods of study
  • Scan and email it to feesandenrolments@aut.ac.nz or provide it to the Student Hub.
  • The enrolments team will assess your family application and invoice you accordingly for the period of cover

The appropriate additional insurance fees will be added to your AUT finance account when the application has been processed. The updated insurance fees will appear on your tuition fees statement, which you must pay immediately. Your updated policy will then be sent to you directly from the insurance provider.

Please refer to the FAQ section for the deadline for submission of family cover

To lodge a Studentsafe Inbound University insurance claim, please ensure you have the following details:

  • Completed claim form
  • Proof of bank account
  • Documentation to support your claim (medical certificates, receipts, etc)
  • Your policy number (this is your AUT ID number)

You must then submit your insurance claim directly with Studentsafe via the Online Claims Portal

Alternative insurance must cover at minimum your study start date and up to your study visa expiry date, preferably including your travel to and from New Zealand.

A copy of your alternative insurance policy (in English) must be emailed to feesandenrolments@aut.ac.nz no later than the Friday before you start your study. Alternative policies submitted after this will not be accepted and you will be automatically invoiced for the AUT Studentsafe Inbound insurance.
