Master of Design

The Master of Design is a one and a half year (full-time) research degree aimed at developing design expertise. You can specialise in either Product Design, Fashion and Textile Design, Communication Design, Digital Design or Spatial Design. You will implement creative research strategies and work on projects across disciplines while demonstrating social awareness and ethical responsibility.

Areas of study include:

  • Product Design (User centered industrial design, design for health and wellbeing)
  • Communication Design (typography, illustration, animation and short film, photography and graphic novel)
  • Spatial Design (interior, furniture, urbanism, performance, installation, moving image, digital environments, exhibition design and spatial theory)
  • Digital Design (Virtual and Augmented Reality, Motion Capture, Animation, Cinematic and Post-Cinematic Practices, Visual Effects, Future Pedagogy, Gaming, Sound Design for VR, Interactive Art and Design Practices, Experience Design)
  • Fashion and Textile Design (smart textiles, knit, print, textile, fashion and costume design)

Entry Requirements

In order to be admitted to the Master of Design you must have completed the Bachelor of Design or equivalent with a B grade average or higher in the papers at level 7 or above. You may be required to attend a selection interview.

Structure and Content

There are two options:

Option One – by thesisComprises a core paper (of 15 or 30 points), elective papers (up to 45 points) and a thesis (120 points).

Option Two – by projectComprises a core paper (of 15 or 30 points), elective papers (up to 75 points) and a design research project (90 points).
