Graduate Diploma in Health Science

The Graduate Diploma in Health science is designed for people without a degree but with extensive work experience in health, sport or recreation and who want to gain a qualification in their field. It includes papers from the Bachelor of Health Science or Bachelor of Sport and Recreation.

The Graduate Diploma in Health Science is also a good option if you have a degree in another area, and you don’t meet the entry requirements for postgraduate study.

  • Child and Adolescent Psychotherapy Studies pathway: this is designed for health professionals, teachers, youth workers and people with extensive experience of working with children and a strong interest in becoming a specialist child and adolescent psychotherapist. You can go on to further postgraduate study in this area.
  • Psychotherapy Studies pathway: this is designed for health professionals and volunteers who want a close understanding of human experience and behaviour. You can go on to study the Master of Psychotherapy.
  • Te Ara Hauora Maori papers: You can select Maori health papers if you want to develop the skills to work more effectively with Maori.

  • A bachelor’s degree OR
  • Relevant professional qualification or experience approved by the Dean (or representative) to be equivalent to a bachelor’s degree
  • Experience of personal psychotherapy (for Psychotherapy Studies, and Child and Adolescent Psychotherapy pathways only)

  • Interview will be required (for Psychotherapy Studies pathway only)

Structure and Content

You need to take eight 15-point approved undergraduate papers, of which at least five must be at level 7. You can choose papers from the following areas (prerequisites and limitations may apply):

  • Addictions
  • Child and Adolescent Psychotherapy Studies
  • Health Promotion
  • Psychology
  • Psychotherapy
