Bachelor of Engineering Technology - Construction Safety Engineering

Health and safety in the workplace are of immense importance for the construction industry in New Zealand and worldwide. Recently introduced and upgraded legislation means that safety issues in construction will continue to grow. This means there’s a need for engineering professionals with a broad understanding of construction technologies, site safety, human factors and safety engineering.

The Construction Safety Engineering major will equip you with the skills to manage construction sites and organisational health and safety activities. You’ll develop a sound knowledge of safety technologies, design, operations and the legal framework of the construction industry. The combination of safety technology and management knowledge will enable you to adapt to the future demands of construction in New Zealand.

Minimum entry requirements

  • University Entrance or equivalent
  • Any level 3 subject from Calculus, Mathematics, Statistics. Physics at level 2 or above

Structure and Content

Year 1

This major shares some of the first year with the other majors in the Bachelor of Engineering Technology. You develop skills in essential construction technology and materials, as well as generic engineering skills.

Year 2

You become familiar with human factors engineering, site safety engineering and design implementation. In addition to the multiple safety-specific skills introduced, you also explore resilience engineering, management, cost engineering and project management in construction.

Year 3

This year covers advanced construction technology as well as further safety-specific skills, including site engineering and safety engineering. You also complete the compulsory integration specialisation project. You work as part of team, undertaking the role of a safety professional to develop safety management protocols and plans, working alongside students from other construction disciplines.
