The Department of Conservation (Te Papa Atawhai) established these scholarships in 2020

To support postgraduate research to help answer strategic and high priority questions around conservation related science in Aotearoa New Zealand.

Selection criteria:

  • Applications for the scholarship will be open to candidates: • who are enrolled in, or eligible to enrol in, a full time or part time Masters degree in a New Zealand university or equivalent tertiary institution • whose proposed course of study includes a minimum research component of 90 credits • who will undertake research into a topic identified by DOC as a priority for conservation research. The selection committee awards scholarships based on the following criteria: • Relevance of research topic to the achievement of DOC's and the relevant funding partners' research priorities. • Relevance of the thesis topic to the principles of the Treaty of Waitangi. • Whether the proposed research contributes to the relevant body of knowledge. • Academic merit of the applicant. • Genuine interest in research topic and evidence of commitment to conservation science from the applicant.

Apply Online Candidates are requested by the Committee to submit as part of their application: • a statement detailing why they wish to undertake the proposed course of study and what they wish to gain from it, including future career plans. • a statement detailing how their proposed programme of study relates to the priority areas of importance to Te Papa Atawhai as detailed on the Te Papa Atawhaiwebsite.www.universitiesnz.ac.nz • a statement detailing how their proposed programme of study relates to the principles of the Treaty of Waitangi. • a CV and cover letter. • Academic transcript • statements fromtwo referees -one of whom must be from amember of facultyin the institution where they are studying; the other,acharacterreference submitted by someone who has known the candidate for minimum of one year. (family members are excluded)

Decision makers
The Selection Committee will consist of: • Chief Science Advisor, Te Papa Atawhaior nominee, who shall be the convenor and have a casting vote. • Kahui Kaupapa Atawhairepresentative, Te Papa Atawhai, or nominee. • Universities NZ scholarship committee convenor, or nominee. • Other suitably qualified selectors as determined by the Chief Science Advisor, Te Papa Atawhai.
