Workshop Overview

Following an open call for expressions of interest, the Royal Society of New Zealand was awarded the bid to develop and operate the Science Media Centre. The New Zealand Science Media Centre was launched to the media on 30 June 2008 and officially opened on 1 July 2008.

Active researchers with prior media experience or those likely to encounter media in future will benefit most from the workshop and are encouraged to apply.

Selection criteria:

  • One scholarship covering full course fees is available to a qualifying postgraduate student who shows exceptional promise in the area of science communication. A second scholarship is available for an early career researcher (<5 yrs post PhD).

Decision makers
Dedicated support for Science Media SAVVY from the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment (MBIE) has made it possible to reduce fees and provide two scholarships.

How and when do students learn of the decision?
Science Media SAVVY will respond to your completed online application in time for your course placement.

What conditions are attached to acceptance of this award?
Each workshop is limited to 12 participants, to maximise hands on experience and individualised attention. The intensive two day format allows new skills to be developed, mastered and put directly into practice. Following a competitive selection process, a final group of twelve participants is chosen to represent a broad range of research disciplines and exprience levels.

Science Media SAVVY workshops are led by Science Media staff Peter Griffin and Dacia Herbulock , with support from veteran media trainer Michael Brown of Skillset NZ.
