The Prime Minister's Pacific Youth Awards - The Leadership & Inspiration Award is sponsored by Air New Zealand.

This award recognises a young person who has demonstrated outstanding leadership qualities by leading a project in their community, church or school or has acted in a way that has inspired others to make a positive change in their own life or the lives of others.


Selection criteria:

  • Applicants must: • show how they demonstrated outstanding leadership qualities e.g. by leading a project in their community, church or school or by inspiring others to make a positive change in their own life or the lives of others • Describe what outcomes their leadership has helped achieve. Applicants must be: • aged 17-24 years of age at the time applications are called for • are New Zealand residents of Pacific descent • and can demonstrate that they are involved in their community.

How do students apply?
The 2020 Prime Minister's Pacific Youth Awards have been cancelled as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. We believe that cancelling the Awards this year will allow our Pacific youth more time to prepare their entries for next year. The Alert Level 4 lockdown was announced during the preparation for the Awards. The Prime Minister's Pacific Youth Awards to relaunch in 2021, when we can continue to share and celebrate the inspiring Pacific youth in  Aotearoa

Decision makers
The selection panel will comprise representatives from the five sponsors and two representatives from the Pacific community. The Prime Minister’s Pacific Youth Awards (PMPYA) are for young Pacific New Zealanders only.

How and when do students learn of the decision?
Recipients will be announced at the PMPYA Awards celebration in December and published online the next day.  You can apply more than once for the relevant award, if you have not previously been a winner.

What conditions are attached to acceptance of this award?
Please note that shortlisted applicants will be required to undertake a police check. Their permission will be sought should this be required.
