The Sonja Davies Peace Award was established as a tribute to the life and work of Sonja Davies, to acknowledge her contribution to the advancement of women and her commitment to peace. The Trust gratefully acknowledges the generous sponsorship of individuals and organisations who made the Sonja Davies Peace Award possible. Donations to this fund are welcome.

The Sonja Davies Peace Award promotes initiatives that advance peace in New Zealand. The award is available to a woman or group led by a woman who are developing an initiative that will help them create a more peaceful world at home, school, the workplace, or in the community.

Selection criteria:

  • When selecting awardees,the selection panel consider the following; The relevance of the initiative to the purpose of the award Schedule and evidence of progress Financial circumstances Experience of the applicant(s), particularly their capability to carry out the initiative Benefit to the advancement of peace in New Zealand; and to women and/or girls in New Zealand. Tertiary study or research projects are not eligible for this award nor are previous award winners of this award.

How do students apply?
Complete an online application form at from 1 March

Decision makers
A panel that includes a representative of the NHWTHK, and two or more people with broad understandings of the issues concerning peace will select the award winner. 

How and when do students learn of the decision?
Once the selection process is completed, all applicants will be notified of the outcome. This is expected to be mid-June with awards presented in July/August.

What conditions are attached to acceptance of this award?
Winners are required to supply the NHWTHK with a brief progress report within a year and a short written report at the completion of the project funded by the award. They should acknowledge the Award and the NHWTHK in all material resulting from their project. Award winners may be asked to contribute to publicity about the award 

Additional information
The award may be used for any expenditure, which advances the approved project. This may be related to the research, the study or publication, or with incidental expenses such as books, equipment, child care.
