The Genesis Oncology Trust fund was established with a settlement from Genesis Power Limited in May 2002. The Trust fund has been invested and, as a registered charity, the Trust welcomes donations from individuals and firms.
The scholarships are intended to provide personal support for graduate students whose proposed programme of advanced study or research for a higher degree (e.g. PhD or MD) in a field related to cancer.
How do students apply?
The application must be made by the student, together with their supervisor or supervisors, through the head of the Department where the student is to work. Forms available from the Trust set out the information needed. Electronic application forms (in MS Word) can be obtained from the Administrator of the Trust or from www.genesisoncology.org.nz. A confidential report from the supervisor and one other person familiar with the applicant's academic record will be required. Interviews may be arranged with the student, the proposed supervisor, and representatives of the Trust. The closing date for applications is early October each year, please check the Trust web site for dates. An original with signatures plus twelve copies are required. How and when do students learn of the decision?
Notified in Early December - initially by email, followed by a formal letter of offer and contract. Payment will be through the host institution.
What conditions are attached to acceptance of this award?
All scholars are required to submit an annual report to the Trust on the anniversary of their commencement date. They are also required to submit a final report within one month of submitting their thesis.
Any scholar who publishes the results of work performed during the tenure of a Postgraduate Scholarship is required to acknowledge the assistance they have received by stating, "the research was conducted during the tenure of a Postgraduate Scholarship from Genesis Oncology Trust". Such publications must have the approval of the supervisor.
