No. of awards: Normally 1 Masters and 1 PhD per yr
Tenure: The scholarship is available for up to three years according to the course of study. Normally, it would be expected that scholars study for one degree at a university.

Dick and Mary Earle have established this scholarship for the support and encouragement of postgraduate research at NZ universities into aspects of technology.

The purpose of the scholarship is to provide funds for individuals to undertake research towards a masterate or doctorate degree at a New Zealand university or research institution in one or both of these fields: • innovation and product development • bioprocess technology.

Selection criteria:

  • • Applicants will be New Zealand citizens or permanent residents who have resided in New Zealand for at least three years immediately preceding the year of selection. • Applicants will have a BTech, BEng, BE degree or equivalent, with honours where they are awarded, at a NZ university and in a field appropriate to their intended postgraduate study. In assessing applications the Selection Committee will use the following criteria: • Practical relevance of the proposed study to New Zealand industry with regard to product development and innovation in, but not limited to, the food and bioprocessing industries. • Backing for the project. • Capability of the candidate to deliver by successfully completing the project within the allocated timetable. • Academic record. Decision makers
The Selection Committee consists of: • Convenor of the Universities New Zealand Scholarships Committee or their nominee • a professor from a New Zealand university informed in the fields of the scholarship • professional technologists or engineers with expertise in the fields of the scholarship • representatives of the Dick and Mary Earle Technology Trust.

How and when do students learn of the decision?
Applicants will be notified by email or phone, and interviews will be held in mid to late November.

What conditions are attached to acceptance of this award?
The scholarship is tenable with other scholarships, but account will be taken of the aggregate circumstances of the scholar and the desirability of using available funds to best advantage. Candidates at interview will be required to make clear their position in light of this stipulation.  

Additional information
Payments are dependent on positive and satisfactory progress reports from the institution at which the scholar is studying. Unsatisfactory progress may lead to termination of the award.
