New Horizons for Women Trust: Hine Kahukura provides awards that benefit women and/or girls. Each year the Trust provides a number of second-chance education, research and specific purpose awards.

Research Awards aim to support women who are conducting research that benefits women and/or girls in Aotearoa New Zealand.


Selection criteria:

  • Before you apply please ensure you meet ALL the following eligibility criteria: A woman (or group of women) who: Is engaged in research that benefits women and/or girls in New Zealand Is a New Zealand citizen or holds a resident class visa; and currently lives in New Zealand Has not previously received a NHWT:HK Research Award NOTE: Preference will be given to applicants who have started their research project and whose work is at masters, PhD or postdoctoral level.

Decision makers
The awards are assessed by a convened panel of appropriately skilled volunteers who make recommendations to the NHWTHK Trust board for ratification. 

How and when do students learn of the decision?
Once the selection process is completed, all applicants will be notified of the outcome. This is expected to be mid-June with awards presented in July/August.

What conditions are attached to acceptance of this award?

The Wāhine Ora award co-funded by New Horizons for Women Trust: Hine Kahukura and Ngā Pae o te Māramatanga , New Zealand's Māori Centre for Research Excellence, is valued at $10,000. The award aims to support research that benefits Māori women, girls and/or whānau in Aotearoa New Zealand. The name Wāhine Ora depicts the wellbeing, mana and wairua of Māori and their whānau. The Maragret L Bailey Science award is to support the research costs of a a woman undertaking post-doctoral research in the physical and social sciences, $5000. Generously sponsored by Margaret L Bailey, this is a one off award for research associated costs only. The Research Awards are for women who are conducting research that benefits women and/or girls in New Zealand. The awards are a one off grant to help with your research and/or living expenses; Margaret Shields Research Award, $5,000 Ria McBride Research Award, $5,000
