Tenure: The Undergraduate Scholarship is generally for five years in total, comprising 1 year of Japanese language training and 4 years of study toward a Bachelor's degree. For those studying in fields such as medicine or dentistry, veterinary medicine or a 6 year pharmacy course, the scholarship may be extended up to 7 years.

Regulations

The Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science, and Technology (MEXT) of the Government of Japan offers a full undergraduate scholarship to foreign students who wish to study at Japanese universities.

Offered to students who wish to study at Japanese universities as undergraduate students, studying towards a Bachelor's Degree in their chosen field.


Selection criteria:

  • This scholarship is available to applicants who are born on or after 2 April 1997 and have completed 12 years of school education OR completed courses in a school comparable to a high school (includes prospective graduates). Applicants must be a citizen of New Zealand. A five-year scholarship is offered (first year in Japanese language training, four years degree) beginning in April, or September/October 2022.

Decision makers
The Japanese Embassy will select preliminary candidates from among applicants by means of an interview, an academic examination and a review of the submitted documents. Those who have been selected as preliminary candidates will be recommended to MEXT, who will select the grantees from among those recommended.

How and when do students learn of the decision?
Schedule: • April 2021: Applications open • June 4 2021: Applications close • June 21 2021: Examinations are held • June 24 2021: Interviews are held • Late June 2021: Primary screening decision and notification • February 2022: Secondary screening decision and notification • April OR September/October 2022: Departure for Japan

What conditions are attached to acceptance of this award?
Students must abide by the laws of Japan and the rules of their university. Scholars are expected to put effort into learning the Japanese language while on the Scholarship. Warning: In some countries there are fraudulent organisations that offer to help students apply for these Japanese Government scholarships in return for a deposit. The only ways to apply for a Japanese Government scholarships are through the Embassy of Japan in your home country, or through a participating Japanese university. You will not be asked to pay a deposit to apply for the scholarships.

Additional information
Applicants must choose a field from either Social Sciences and Humanities, or Natural Sciences, and also choose up to three preferred Majors within that field. A more detailed description is provided in the Application Guidelines.
