Auckland University of Technology (AUT) provides postgraduate scholarships to encourage postgraduate study and research and to recognise student academic achievement.

The School of Art and Design will offer AUT Postgraduate Research Scholarships for study commencing in Semester 1, 2022. AUT Postgraduate Research Scholarships are available to students undertaking study including a research component at Level 8 (Bachelor Honours Degree) or Level 9 (Master’s Degree) on the New Zealand Qualifications Framework (NZQF) who have demonstrated the potential to achieve highly. The scholarships are available to students intending to enrol in a programme of study with equivalence of a 30-point (or above) research component in a bachelor with honours degree, or a 45-point (or above) research component in a master’s degree. (See Appendix in Regulations for list of eligible programmes)


Selection criteria:

  • Preference will be given to applicants enrolling for the first time in the eligible programme. 1.  Applicants must have completed their qualifying programme at AUT or any other New Zealand tertiary institution. 2.  Applicants must be intending to study full-time. 3.  Applicants must: a) Achieve a minimum GPA of 7.5 (A-/A) across a 120pts in the final year of their qualifying programme; or b) Be registered in ARION as having Māori or Pacific first ethnicity and achieve a minimum GPA of 6.5 (B+/A-) across 120pts in the final year of their qualifying programme; or c) Be able to prove significant financial hardship and achieve a minimum GPA of 6.5 (B+/A-) across 120pts in the final year of their qualifying programme. 4. Recipients of this scholarship are not eligible to reapply in subsequent years. 5. Students who already commenced studies in the eligible programme may apply, and if successful the scholarship tenure will be reduced by the studies already completed in the approved programme.

How do students apply?
Applications will open in October of the year preceding study for Semester 1 study or May for study in Semester 2.  Applicants must complete the online AUT Postgraduate Research Scholarship Application available through the AUT Scholarships Database www.aut.ac.nz/scholarships. Applications will open in October of the year preceding study for Semester 1 enrolment starts (Master of Philosophy enrolments February or May) and May for Semester 2 enrolment starts (Master of Philosophy enrolments August or November). Applicants will be asked to upload the following documentation: - A one-page personal statement outlining the applicant’s academic goals, motivation and interest in research study and career aspirations stating why they believe they merit the scholarship. - If the applicant is applying for Master of Philosophy or Masters’ by 120pts thesis, their approved PGR1. - If the applicant is applying under the category Māori or Pacific, they must outline in the statement their cultural involvement. - If an applicant wishes to be considered as under financial hardship, they must address this in their personal statement and upload evidence of their financial position, i.e., IRD statement of income, and provide a reference from a person other than a family member who can support the applicant’s financial need. - Academic transcript(s) for any previous tertiary study that was completed at a New Zealand tertiary institution other than AUT. - A copy of the applicant’s AUT transcript will be added to the application by the Scholarships Office once grades have been finalised.

Recipients of School or Faculty funded scholarships will be selected by the funding unit.

How and when do students learn of the decision?
Applicants will be notified by the University Scholarships Office as soon as possible after selection panels have made their decisions.

What conditions are attached to acceptance of this award?
 The award of this scholarship is conditional on the student enrolling full-time in an approved programme within a twelve month period. Approved study may be in Semester 1, Semester 2 and the Summer Semester (if available).  ·         The recipient may hold other scholarships with the approval of the Scholarships Office. ·         The scholarship cannot be deferred. ·         Recipients must be enrolled continuously in their programme of study. Suspensions or Leave of Absence for students who have already commenced their programme will not normally be approved unless there are compelling medical or personal circumstances beyond the student’s control.  ·         Deferral and suspension requests must be made in writing to the Scholarships Office. ·         Recipients who take up this Scholarship but do not complete at least two semesters of study at AUT may be required to pay back the full value of the scholarship received.

Additional information
The scholarship consists of tuition fees and compulsory student services fees (domestic equivalent rate) for:  - 120pts at Level 8 or above in the approved programme of study completed within a twelve[1]month period; or - 180pts at Level 9 in the approved programme of study completed within an eighteen-month period, or - 240pts at Level 8 or above in the approved programme of study completed within a twenty-four-month period. Stipend scholarships may also be awarded to top applicants - tuition fees and compulsory student services fees plus an annual stipend of either $5,000 or $10,000.
