Auckland University of Technology (AUT) in recognition of its partnership with Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei has established undergraduate scholarships to increase participation, retention and success of Māori (of Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei descent) who have demonstrated the academic potential to succeed at tertiary level.

As well as recognising academic achievement in students of Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei descent, these scholarships recognise potential leadership ability and contribution to the school, and community.  


Selection criteria:

  • • Applicants must be NZ Citizens or permanent residents. • The applicant must be a registered Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei hapū member.  If you are not a registered member, please return a completed registration form to register@ngatiwhatuaorakei.com.  A registration form can be found on the Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei website: Hapū registration – Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei (ngatiwhatuaorakei.com).  Please note that the registration process could take up to two months .  • Applicants who are not of Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei descent will not be eligible to receive this scholarship.  To check if you are a registered hapū member please contact: register@ngatiwhatuaorakei.com. • Applicants must be enrolled or intending to enrol in a full-time programme of study at undergraduate degree level or above (excluding doctoral) and will be asked to provide their AUT Student ID in the box provided on the application form. • Applicants will be expected to obtain a minimum University Entrance and gain admission into a full-time programme of study at AUT University. • Applicants must have demonstrated academic potential and the potential for leadership. • Applicants must be prepared to engage with Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei and kaupapa-ā-iwi and to attend and assist at tertiary whānau hui at AUT during the tenure of the scholarship.

How do students apply?
Applicants must complete the online Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei AUT Community Partnership Scholarship application available via www.aut.ac.nz/scholarships.   Applicants will be required to upload: 1. A one-page personal statement explaining their reasons for wishing to attend AUT, their academic and career goals and why they believe they merit the scholarship. 2. A current copy of their NCEA record of achievement or academic transcripts for any previous tertiary study at an institution other than AUT. 3. Applicants will have their registration with Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei Whakapapa verified after the completed application is submitted.

Decision makers
• Applications will need to be sent to Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei Trust after closing date to confirm registration. • The panel will consist of a Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei representative as well as representatives from AUT.

How and when do students learn of the decision?
As soon as possible in the year of application.

What conditions are attached to acceptance of this award?
• The awarding of this scholarship is conditional on the student gaining entry to an AUT undergraduate degree level or higher programme. • Recipients must be enrolled in a full-time programme of study. Scholars must enrol in a minimum of 120pts during the tenure of the scholarship. Permission to study less than 120pts will only be given in exceptional circumstances.   In such cases the value of the scholarship will be pro-rated. Refer to the Regulations for all conditions.
