The HOPE Foundation Scholarships are intended to support scientists in the early stages of their careers conducting research into ageing. The HOPE Foundation for Research on Ageing is a non-Government funded Charitable Trust established to prepare New Zealand for an ageing future. The mission of the HOPE Foundation is to: - Lead and resource the funding of people doing research on ageing - Disseminate research-based information about the effects of ageing on individuals and society - Develop the pool of researchers in New Zealand - Influence decision-makers to improve the quality of life for ageing New Zealanders. The HOPE Foundation seeks to encourage research into ageing phenomena both individual and societal, because they believe that as the nation ages, many issues will arise that will have to be addressed in order to assist New Zealand Society to cope with the effects of the ageing population. In this way, the Foundation wants to help prepare New Zealand for an ageing future.

This Scholarship for research into postgraduate aging will be offered for study at AUT in the year following application and will be funded by the HOPE Foundation.

Selection criteria:

  • All applicants for these scholarships must: -Be New Zealand citizens or permanent residents, there is however discretion to also consider applications from International students of merit, who are currently enrolled and doing postgraduate research study onshore at a New Zealand University. (Regulations document to be updated) -Be enrolled and have paid the fees, or arranged to pay the fees, for a full-time or part-time master's thesis/dissertation, or doctoral thesis at AUT University on a topic related to ageing. Applications will be accepted from a wide range of disciplines in line with the HOPE Foundation's philosophy of encouraging eclectic research into ageing and its effects on individuals and society.

How do students apply?
APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS Application for the scholarship is through the AUT online portal which will be available from a link at the top of this page.  To complete the application process all required documentation must be included.  Incomplete or late applications are not able to be submitted and will not be forwarded to the selection panel.  The following documents or statements will need to be uploaded and submitted with the application by 11.55pm on the closing date. - A brief (no more than three pages) outline of the proposed research  - Evidence that ethical approval for the proposed research has been applied for or approved - A photo of the applicant for the Foundations’ use for publicity purposes. - An indication of Budget and how the grant will be spent Applications must be submitted online by 31 October of the year preceding the anticipated award, e.g. 31 October 2020 for the 2021 academic year.

Decision makers
The successful applicant(s) will be selected by a Standing Committee established by the Hope Foundation. The basis of selection will include: -the quality of the proposed research, -the perceived relevance of the research to the ageing population and the overall goals of The HOPE Foundation, and -the academic merit of the applicant. Academic merit will be measured on the grade point average assessed over the applicant's two most recent years of equivalent full-time study. If the Committee in any year considers applicants are not of sufficient merit the scholarship will not be awarded.

What conditions are attached to acceptance of this award?
-Successful recipients will be expected to report progress to the HOPE Foundation at the end of each year of support and to provide a final report of the finished research. -Recipients will be expected to acknowledge support of the HOPE Foundation in any publication, report or presentation that results from the research. -The Foundation will not restrict the publication of research results by the recipient of a scholarship. However, from time to time, in order to enhance its own public profile as a research-supporting entity, the Foundation will negotiate with recipients the publication of reports on their research and the final report of finished research in some agreed form. RENEWAL CONDITIONS This scholarship is available only for the academic year applied for.  In the event that a renewal is possible, current scholars who wish to apply for grant renewal must do so through the Scholarships Office with a letter addressed to the HOPE Foundation by the 31 October closing deadline. The application must include a progress report on the project to date written by the applicant and endorsed by the supervisor. The HOPE Foundation is unable to provide any certainty that funds will be available beyond the first year.
