This scholarship was established in 1983, and was the bequest of Roy Watling Mitchell. His estate is managed by the Guardian Trust.

Available to first-year full-time Māori undergraduate students who attended secondary school as a Year 13 student in 2018.  Priority will be given to students with academic merit and financial need.

Selection criteria:

  • Undergraduate applicants must: i.                be of New Zealand Māori descent; ii.               be enrolled at a New Zealand tertiary institute in 2019; iii.             be attending full-time study for the full year; iv.             meet the criteria for the scholarships applied for; v.               submit the application and supporting documentation on time.

Selection panels are made up of external subject experts and representatives of bequest whanau and Trusts.

How and when do students learn of the decision?
All applicants (successful and unsuccessful) will be notified in writing within three months after the scholarship closing date.  

What conditions are attached to acceptance of this award?
If you meet scholarship criteria, you can apply for as many scholarships as you wish, however you can only be awarded one.  

Additional information
Successful applicants will be required to provide hard-copy evidence of their enrolment at their Secondary School or Tertiary Institution, before final payments of grants are made.
