The funds for this scholarship are provided by the income from a bequest made to the University of New Zealand in 1934 by Lawrence Berry Wood, a retired Inspector of Schools.

The scholarship is to enable New Zealand university graduates to study in any discipline at a university or institution of university rank in the UK. The scholarship is intended as a supplement to some other postgraduate scholarship/s.

Selection criteria:

  • Applicants must: be graduates of or graduating from a New Zealand university apply for the scholarship within three years from the date of their graduation have applied for or been awarded another postgraduate scholarship.

Representatives of the Universities New Zealand - Te Pōkai Tara Scholarships Committee or their nominees.

How and when do students learn of the decision?
Candidates will be notified by phone or email in June/July.

What conditions are attached to acceptance of this award?
Scholars must provide progress reports to Universities New Zealand every six months, one from the scholar and one from the university/research supervisor. Final scholar and supervisor reports are expected upon completion of the scholarship. Reports must be satisfactory for the scholarship to continue. The successful candidate must show proof of university enrolment, and proof they have received at least one other postgraduate scholarship.

Additional information
Tenure begins in the same year the award is made. Scholars will agree to have their names and images published and be available for interviews with the media if required.
