The funds for this scholarship are provided by the income from a bequest made in 1951 by Isabel Evelyn Spencer Watson to the University of New Zealand. The scholarship is a memorial to her nephew, Clement Gordon Watson.
The general purpose is to enable New Zealanders to study international relationships or social and economic conditions at a university overseas. Candidates will be planning to study at Masters or PhD level.

The Board of Selection comprises: * the Governor-General for the time being or in his/her absence from New Zealand the Administrator of the Government * the Anglican Bishop of Wellington for the time being * the Minister of Education for the time being * two members of the Universities New Zealand-Te Pōkai Tara Scholarships Committee who will be appointed and may be removed and replaced from time to time. The Governor-General, the Bishop of Wellington and the Minister of Education, if unable to act personally, may appoint another person to represent them on the Board of Selection.
How and when do students learn of the decision?
Applicants will be notified by phone or email and decisions are made in June/July.
What conditions are attached to acceptance of this award?
Candidates must confirm that if awarded a scholarship they will return to New Zealand after their studies and reside in New Zealand for at least two years. However, the Board of Selection may waive this requirement or release a scholarship-holder from this condition.
Additional information
Universities New Zealand-Te Pōkai Tara can terminate any scholarship and its emoluments at any time if it is not satisfied with the work or the conduct of the scholar.
