This fellowship comes from a monetary gift made to the University of New Zealand in 1935 by Sir George Shirtcliffe of Wellington.
The Shirtcliffe Fellowship assists New Zealand university graduates to pursue doctoral study at a university in New Zealand or other Commonwealth country.

Universities NZ convene a Selection Committee to assess applications and nominate applicants to award.
How and when do students learn of the decision?
Decisions are made in June and applicants will be notified by phone or email.
What conditions are attached to acceptance of this award?
Scholars must satisfy Universities NZ that they are officially registered for their PhD and are making satisfactory progress. A fellow must supply their thesis or PhD record to Universities NZ and the Selection Committee if requested.
Additional information
Successful candidates must agree to have their name and image published and be available for interviews with the media if required. The Selection Committee at any time can request further information from or a personal interview with any candidate. See the Regulations for full details.
