Value of Award: A Rhodes Scholarship is tenable at Oxford University.
No. of awards: Up to three scholars each year.
Tenure: A Rhodes Scholarship covers: All University and College fees; The University application fee; A personal stipend which is fixed by the Trustees One economy class airfare to Oxford at the start of the scholarship and one economy flight back to the student's home country at the conclusion of the scholarship. While the partners of Rhodes Scholars are warmly welcomed by Rhodes House, Oxford, married/partnered applicants should take note that the stipend is sufficient for one person only, and the Rhodes Trust takes no responsibility for support of the Scholar's spouse/partner or dependants. Financial need gives no special claim to a Rhodes Scholarship.

The Rhodes Scholarships for New Zealand A Partnership between the Rhodes Trust and the Robertson Foundation  

After election a successful candidate has still to apply to and be accepted by a Department or Faculty of the University and by a college. A Rhodes Scholarship is confirmed once a successful candidate has been offered a place in a Department or Faculty of the University and in a college. Tenure of other awards in conjunction with a Rhodes Scholarship is not permitted without prior consultation with the Secretary of the Trust in Oxford.The New Zealand constituency may elect up to three scholars each year.  


Selection criteria:

  • Candidates must: on 1 August in the year of application be a citizen of New Zealand or hold a New Zealand Permanent Resident visa. by 1 August in the year of application have spent at least five of the previous ten years in New Zealand. by the time of entry to Oxford have graduated with an undergraduate degree. be of an age that they will have passed their nineteenth and not passed their twenty-fifth birthday by 1 October in the year they would begin study at Oxford.

Decision makers
Rhodes Scholarship selection committees will be seeking young women and men of outstanding intellect, character, leadership, and commitment to service. The Rhodes Scholarships support students who demonstrate strong potential to emerge as 'leaders for the world’s future'.  

How and when do students learn of the decision?
The short listed candidates will be invited to a personal interview with the New Zealand Selection Committee. From these interviews the committee may elect the Rhodes scholars.

Selection Criteria The will of Cecil Rhodes outlines four criteria to be used in the election of Scholars: literary and scholastic attainments energy to use one's talents to the full truth, courage, devotion to duty, sympathy for and protection of the weak, kindliness, unselfishness and fellowship moral force of character and instincts to lead, and to take an interest in one's fellow beings.
