This practicum paper provides supervised, practice-based training for Psychology Assistant students within health, community, and related settings in Aotearoa New Zealand. Students will develop and demonstrate core competencies required for safe, ethical, and culturally responsive practice as Psychology Assistants, including foundational skills in assessment, intervention, communication, case management, and teamwork. The course emphasises the integration of Te Tiriti o Waitangi and cultural safety, reflective practice, legal and ethical knowledge, and regular supervision within applied placements. Students will actively engage in interdisciplinary teams, learning collaborative care planning, shared decision-making, and effective communication across professional roles. Crisis management principles will be embedded throughout the practicum, including recognising acute risk, applying de-escalation strategies, and escalating concerns appropriately within organisational protocols. Through placement activities, supervision, and structured assessments, students will build a portfolio of experience, critically reflect on their developing practice, and demonstrate readiness for safe, competent work as Psychology Assistants.
