The course introduces students to public service settings in the Aotearoa New Zealand where translators and interpreters commonly work. Students develop knowledge of the conventions of English discourse typically used in these settings, including an understanding of sociopragmatics and pragmalinguistics and the intercultural implications for interpreting. There is a focus on remote interpreting techniques, including interaction and turntaking management, phonology, stress markers and discourse markers in the absence of non-verbal cues.
