Student teachers are introduced to the practice of teaching through practicum experiences in an early learning service, to build confidence in their ‘being’ as a teacher underpinned by Te Tiriti o Waitangi. In the latter stages of the practicum, students demonstrate evidence-based teaching strategies focusing on diverse learners across a range of learning areas. Students engage in reflective practice to demonstrate progress towards achievement of the Teaching Standards (in a supportive environment) and an understanding of the Code of Professional Responsibility. Through these experiences, students begin to develop adaptive expertise.
