Project management draws on multiple theories, including systems, contingency, and complexity theories, as well as natural science concepts such as cybernetics and chaos, to explain projects as interconnected, adaptive systems operating under uncertainty. It has evolved from plan-driven, structured approaches to more flexible models as the dynamic business environment has become more complex. Frameworks such as the PMBOK Guide provide structured governance for project management, while SWEBOK supports technical rigour by offering structured, tried-and-tested processes, practices, techniques, metrics, and tools, thereby suggesting that structured software development methods appear most suitable. In contrast, agile methods guided by the Agile Manifesto emphasise iterative delivery and collaboration through methods such as Scrum, XP, and Kanban. At scale, agile frameworks such as Disciplined Agile Delivery, the Scaled Agile Framework, and the Spotify Model, guided by agile organisation theory and concepts, enable coordination beyond project levels and across teams at various levels in organisations delivering software, while dynamic capabilities and software ecosystems support adaptability and innovation in dynamic business environments in a large-scale setup.
