In Aotearoa New Zealand teachers recognise and respond to each child as an individual member of a community. Teachers are prepared to work with diversity in the early learning service or primary/intermediate school. This includes Māori learners as bicultural partners as well as ethnically diverse immigrants and refugee-background learners. Responsiveness to children who learn and behave in different ways is key to teaching in Aotearoa New Zealand. The course aims to foster understanding an appreciation of multiple ways of knowing and being in a diverse society. Students will explore commitment to Te Tiriti o Waitangi, different worldviews, intercultural competencies and the nature of culturally responsive practice as well as learning te reo Māori.
