Group Managing Director, Chancellor Construction Ltd
Master of Business Administration
He is proud of what he has achieved in his role as the group managing director of successful Auckland construction company Chancellor Construction Ltd, says AUT business alumnus Wayne Zeng.
“I’ve been running my own building construction business since 2012, and over the years Chancellor Construction Ltd has won a number of awards, including being ranked fifth on the Deloitte Fast 50 Master of Growth index in 2019 and winning the Westpac Auckland Business Awards in 2016.
“I plan to continue to build on our strong brand presence in Auckland and provide the next level of building construction service experience to all our customers.”
Helping young professionals grow is what Wayne enjoys most about being in a leadership role.
“I enjoy seeing the personal and career developments of my employees, including many who started their career with the company after graduating from college.”
Connections and career development
He found that studying a Master of Business Administration has benefitted his career development long after he graduated from the programme.
“I would absolutely recommend the MBA programme at AUT. It has stayed relevant to what I do and the business decisions I make on a daily basis.”
He especially appreciated the interactive study environment and practical group assignments throughout his studies, Wayne says.
“My classmates were really cool people who had similar backgrounds to me, and some of us are still in regular contact today, almost 11 years later.”
The right choice
He wanted to upskill by obtaining another advanced business degree, says Wayne who came to AUT as an international student from China and completed his MBA in 2008.
“At the time, I was balancing my studies with a full-time career in the finance industry, and therefore flexibility regarding lecture times and class options was important to me.”
After comparing a number of degrees offered by universities in Auckland, he was drawn to AUT by the reputation of its MBA programme.
“AUT’s MBA was a great fit for me because the degree was very well regarded in the banking industry, and my employer at the time sponsored me throughout the completion of this master’s degree. The AUT City Campus location also suited me well in terms of convenience when it came to travelling to the evening classes after work.”
