1st-year student, Bachelor of International Tourism Management
Certificate in Hospitality and Tourism
The Certificate in Hospitality and Tourism is a great pathway into a career in hospitality, tourism or events, says Sosefo Vakauta who is now enrolled in a Bachelor of International Tourism Management.
“I chose to study the Certificate in Hospitality and Tourism to help me decide which pathway to take for my future career, as I wasn’t sure whether I wanted to pursue tourism or events.
“I would definitely recommend the certificate because it helps you decide which pathway to pursue in the future. It also prepares you for further study in a bachelor’s degree, and covers a range of tools relevant for your assignments and exams. I also enjoyed making new friends and getting great support from all my lecturers.”
An eye on the future
The Certificate in Hospitality and Tourism opened Sosefo’s eyes to the potential opportunities a tourism career offers.
“Studying the certificate made me realise that the tourism industry is growing each year, and offers huge career opportunities. Being able to travel has also always been something I’m interested in. Ideally, I’d love to travel after I finish my studies, and then settle down into a tourism career. Maybe I can even create my own tourism business in the future.”
He is enjoying learning about the tourism industry, Sosefo says.
“I’ve loved learning about different types of tourism and how tourism businesses operate, and enjoyed researching successful tourism businesses around New Zealand as well as around the world. The Bachelor of International Tourism Management is also helping me develop my critical thinking and problem-solving skills for dealing with customers and any issues inside a tourism business.”
Advice for other students
About to finish the first year of his Bachelor of International Tourism Management, Sosefo has some great advice for other students.
“My advice would be to attend all classes, even if you think they’re not relevant, and navigate through all the useful tools on Blackboard and Arion as well as other student support services.”
Don’t be afraid to ask for help, he adds.
“Always ask for help if you don’t understand anything as it will help with your grades, and will help increase your knowledge and understanding. I would also recommend spending time with people who want you to succeed and see your true potential.”
