Siniva Talamaivao-Nickel

2nd-year student, Bachelor of Business in Marketing

Deciding to enrol in a business degree was an easy decision for Siniva Talamaivao-Nickel who came to AUT to study a Bachelor of Business in Marketing.

“I chose this degree because I’ve wanted to be an entrepreneur since I was young. When I was in high school, I was always interested in business and even participated in the Young Enterprise Scheme twice. In the future, I’d like to be an entrepreneur focusing on the fashion and beauty industry.”

Having just been awarded the sought-after Zonta Auckland Jane M Klausman Women in Business Scholarship, she is grateful for the extra support to help her achieve her goal.

“I’d definitely recommend applying for a Zonta Auckland scholarship to other young women. The scholarship will help me buy a new laptop which will help me study when I’m not on campus. I’ve had my current laptop for six years and the battery has stopped working, which was very disruptive to my studies. Having the money to buy a new laptop will help me study more efficiently, especially during lockdowns.”

Modern and supportive
Siniva says she decided to come to AUT to study because she was impressed by the university’s modern business programme.

“I like that AUT’s business degree is very relevant for businesses today. The way this degree is structured helps me ensure that my degree is suitable for my needs. I appreciate that AUT has a focus on helping students get jobs after uni, which is really helpful. I also like the idea of being able to complete workplace experience as part of the final year of your degree.”

Her marketing courses have been a highlight of her studies so far.

“I’ve enjoyed my marketing major the most – it’s so interesting and taught really well. The classes are based on modern real-life examples, and I like that the teaching assistants are friendly and really want students to succeed. They always provide great feedback to help me learn more.”

Advice for other students
With only one more year to go before she completes her degree, Siniva has some great advice for other students.

“My advice is to organise and manage your time efficiently. Studying at AUT is a lot more fun when you aren’t staying up to 5am finishing your assignment because you left it to the last minute.”

She wouldn’t hesitate to recommend the Bachelor of Business to other students.

“The classes are so interesting and the assignments are really thought-provoking. The academic staff are very reputable and great at teaching. The class environment is very welcoming and the teaching assistants are so supportive.”
