He didn’t finish high school which, together with early career setbacks and some business failures, fuelled his ambition to complete an MBA with distinction, says AUT business alumnus Sharn Piper.
“After leaving high school when I was only 15 years old, I built several businesses, worked on senior leadership teams and notched up my fair share of business failures. I decided to study the MBA because I felt it would provide me with a broad perspective of the business landscape and frameworks for future opportunities, as well as formalising the practical experience I had already gained.
“The largest achievement for me was finishing with distinction. As someone who never completed high school, I would have been happy with just a ‘Pass’ but to finish this degree with distinction was a huge achievement for me.”
Deciding to come to AUT to study his MBA was easy, Sharn says.
“The structure of the classes and the reputation of AUT made it an easy choice for me. What I’ve enjoyed most about my studies were the people I met along the way. I’ve made some new and lifelong friends.”
He would highly recommend the AUT MBA to others.
“I absolutely would recommend this programme. For me it wasn’t about the degree as such, but the way AUT enabled me to grow my network and delivered classes that could fit around my work and life.”
Sharing his expertise
As the owner of two businesses, Sharn loves that every day for him is different, exciting and offers a new challenge.
“I own two businesses. The first one is Ruption Consulting Group and together with two business partners we provide support services to local government. My role at Ruption Consulting Group is sales and marketing director.
“My other business is Attain, a media, marketing and sales agency that works with businesses to find, win and keep their clients. I’m the CEO of Attain, and we currently have a team of 25 and are rapidly growing.”
He loves being able to solve problems and see people succeed, Sharn says.
“Early on, during the global financial crisis, I had a business that failed badly. I had spent 13 years building this company to have it all come tumbling down around me. The learnings from this experience enabled me to rise from the ashes and start again. I now want to help others avoid the same mistakes and pain.”
