Corporate Institutional Banking Intern, Westpac Institutional Bank, New York
Bachelor of Science in Analytics and Finance
Her internship at Westpac Institutional Bank in New York is a great opportunity to gain experience in an international market and experience a different culture, says Shannon Soudom who got the sought-after internship through the AUT Internz International Scholarship Programme.
“I’m responsible for preparing financial models, and conducting industry research, data analysis and forecasting for the Corporate Institutional Bank team. My work helps relationship managers maximise international clients’ businesses with significant operations in New Zealand and Australia.
“What I enjoy most about this role is learning something new every day and being able to submerse myself in a new work environment and culture. The Corporate Institutional Banking team here at Westpac Institutional Bank is amazing.”
Finding her passion
She discovered her passion for finance in her first year at AUT, says Shannon who studied a Bachelor of Science in Analytics with an additional major in Finance.
“After completing a range of subjects in my first year, I found my interest in finance. Financial instruments like loans, investments and stocks are all key to a successful business and help shape our economy. Finance influences our daily lives and what better way to analyse our financial market than with analytics.”
The people she met throughout her studies are what she enjoyed most about her time at AUT.
“My highlight at AUT was making new friends. I made so many friends during my time at AUT; some were completing the same degree as I was and some studied completely different fields, but I keep in touch with all of them after university. You’d be surprised how much you can learn just from talking to different people.”
Advice for other students
Get involved and make the most of every opportunity, says Shannon who graduated at the end of 2018.
“University is about so much more than just gaining a degree and AUT provides many opportunities for each individual to thrive.
“AUT has various groups, events and career opportunities – including the Investment Club, career fairs and so many more – that enable you to network with business leaders, meet like-minded people, make friends and keep in touch with your industry.”
