She loves that she can use her understanding of food science to make a difference, says Saipriya Shahi who is now a quality assurance specialist for Tasti.

“Tasti has multiple departments offering different product lines, including fruit cereal bars, nut bars, RTE snacks, baking ingredients, cereals, oil and a new gluten free facility. Some of the product lines have been in market since the 1930s.

“My role focuses on quality improvement of both the systems and processes at Tasti. Apart from regular line and product inspections, sensory testing and working alongside the new product development team, I also work on numerous projects leading to improvement of our products, as well as regularly training operators or team members, and performing internal audits.”

She is enjoying the opportunities for growth her role offers.

“The opportunities for system improvement and for personal development are aspects I haven’t had the chance of experiencing before. I’m very excited to see the impact the changes we’re making now will have on our company and products.”

An unforgettable experience
Before joining Tasti in mid-2020, Saipriya worked as a quality assurance coordinator for Pernod Ricard Winemakers – a global leader in the wine and spirits sector – until the company had to shut down its Auckland operations.

“Pernod Ricard Winemakers has employees in 80 countries, and it was such meaningful work because we weren’t only a part of the process to create the best products but we also got make a positive difference for the environment.

“Through my role at Pernod Ricard, I helped create a better future for consumers by providing them with innovative yet quality products, and making sure the products going into the consumer market were safe and compliant with the regulations.”

Saipriya appreciates the opportunities her time at Pernod Ricard offered her.

“I surely miss Pernod Ricard and am still in contact with my quality team there. We meet up regularly just like one big family. I think that will stay with us forever. Honestly, it was been an amazing experience and company to be a part of. I’m also grateful that when the company had to downsize, they provided us with endless resources to make the job transition very smooth.”

A great student experience
She enjoyed her studies at AUT, says Saipriya who completed her Bachelor of Science in Food Science at the end of 2017.

“I just loved the overall experience. The academic staff were extremely supportive. They genuinely wanted their students to not only learn but to do the best they possibly could.”

Saipriya appreciated the amount of opportunities offered at AUT.

“I had the opportunity to be part of many different events, which truly encouraged me to step out of my comfort zone. But the best part about studying at AUT has to be the practical experience you gain as part of your degree. It really prepares you to step out into the real world straight after graduation, and it also helps you recognise how well you’ve understood the content.”
