Maths Teacher, Avondale College
Graduate Diploma in Secondary Teaching
Bachelor of Science in Astronomy and Analytics
For Maurice Greenough, choosing to study astronomy at university was an easy decision.
“I’ve always loved anything to do with space and astronomy. What I liked about AUT was that it’s involved in the SKA (Square Kilometre Array) project and that one of the astronomy lecturers is Professor Sergei Gulyaev from Russia.”
It’s a decision he hasn’t regretted, Maurice says.
“I enjoyed mixing and making friends with a wide range of students from all over the world. I also ended up including the Analytics major in my degree, as was suggested by Professor Sergei Gulyaev. Since it worked in very well with my timetable, the Analytics major became an obvious choice for me.”
Becoming a teacher
After completing his Bachelor of Science, Maurice went on to enrol in a Graduate Diploma in Secondary Teaching to start a teaching career.
“The challenge of teaching interested me. My Bachelor of Science in Astronomy and Analytics gave me the skills to specialise in teaching subjects like Maths, Statistics and Science, and the Graduate Diploma in Secondary Teaching prepared me to register as a teacher for these subjects.”
As a maths teacher at Avondale College, Maurice loves sharing his passion for mathematics with his students.
“In this role, I’m teaching NCEA and Cambridge mathematics to Year 9 to Year 13 students. What I love most about being a teacher is seeing students successfully develop their maths skills.”
Advice for other students
Maurice, who graduated from AUT in 2017, has some great advice for other students.
“My advice for other students is to always persevere with your studies.
“There is always light at the end of the tunnel and your hard work will pay dividends in the end.”
