Final-year student, Bachelor of Business in Accounting
He has long known that accounting is the perfect career for him, says Matthew Ryland who will start as a graduate accountant at KPMG early next year.
“I’ve wanted to be an accountant since high school when I took accounting at NCEA Level 1 and started working in a family accounting business. I enjoy being able to help people who have financial problems and see them succeed.”
Choosing where to study accounting at university was easy, he says.
“I liked AUT’s modern approach, and the fact that its degrees are contemporary and practical. I was also fortunate enough to be offered an AUT Vice-Chancellor’s Scholarship to support my studies.”
Creating great graduates
The workplace experience in his final year was one of the highlights of his studies, Matthew says.
“The fact that AUT offers students many opportunities to network with industry professionals through events, internships and of course the workplace experience is invaluable.
“I completed my workplace experience at KPMG, working as an intern in the enterprise division, which focuses on small and medium business. I enjoyed the variety of tasks I was involved in as I worked with many different clients, each with unique needs. No day was ever the same, and the team at KPMG is great and very friendly.”
Matthew will soon have more opportunities to spend time with the KPMG team – after graduating from AUT at the end of the year he will join KPMG as a graduate accountant in February.
Advice for other students
Make the most of the opportunities on offer, Matthew advises other students.
“My advice is to make sure that you enjoy university life – join clubs, go to networking events and try new things. The large amount of opportunities AUT gives you through clubs, internships, events and other networking opportunities with industry professionals, and workplace experience is impressive.
“Apply for all the opportunities on offer – don’t ever feel you’re not good enough as you can only do your best and an opportunity will always present itself in time, whether that be immediately or not.”
Don’t be afraid to ask for help if you need it, he adds.
“AUT cares about its students and provides lots of support to students, for example by offering career advice and extra classes so that all students feel welcomed and have the best opportunity to thrive.”
