Louie Hu

Head of Marketing for Huawei Thailand Consumer Business Group, Bangkok, Thailand
Bachelor of Business in Marketing and Sales

He loves the strategic thinking ad marketing planning that is at the heart of his career, says Louie Hu who came to AUT as an international student from China and now has a successful marketing career at Huawei.

“In this role, I’m responsible for creating and localising the marketing strategy for our key products. What I enjoy most about this career, is that I’m able to think big and implement my strategies in the local market. Seeing the results from a marketing strategy I’ve created always gives me a sense of achievement.”

Louie joined Huawei after graduating from AUT in 2015, initially serving as the head of service for New Zealand before working his way up to the role of head of marketing for New Zealand, and eventually his current role.

“I’ve successfully joined a great company that has recognised my talent and promoted me from managing the marketing department for one small country to managing the marketing activities for the Asia Pacific region. While the role has its challenges, I’ve quickly managed to adapt and am proud of receiving an A for my performance.

“Marketing is a fast-paced and exciting industry, and I personally believe that it doesn't matter what year we’re in; there will always be a need for people who can market and sell a product efficiently and effectively.”

Taking the first step
For Louie, deciding to enrol in AUT’s Bachelor of Business was the first step towards the career he has now.

“I decided to study at AUT because it has a really good reputation for not only focusing on the theory but also helping students bridge the gap between study and the real world. As part of my studies, I also went on a student exchange to the University of Strathclyde in the UK, which was a great opportunity to broaden my horizon.”

He still fondly remembers his time at university.

“I feel proud to have graduated from AUT and through the workplace experience that is part of the Bachelor of Business I’ve managed to successfully join Huawei and launch my marketing career.”

Advice for other students
Make the most of your time a university, Louie advises other students.

“Cherish every single second you have at university, attend your lectures on time, stay focused on your study, respect the time you have and work hard.

“Once you’re out of university, you’ll will realise that it will be very hard to find the time and energy to study, especially if you’re working in a fast-paced industry. Learn as much as you can to make sure you’re ready for this fast-changing world.”

*This major is now called Marketing, Advertising, Retailing and Sales.
