Corporate Associate, Lowndes Jordan
Bachelor of Laws
Building relationships and learning how clients do business is what he enjoys most about his work, says AUT law alumnus Liam Closey who is now a corporate associate for Lowndes Jordan.
“A lot of project management goes into getting a transaction across the line and you end up building meaningful relationships with people from all of the different industries involved, including the client and the tax or accounting departments. That becomes a really rewarding part of the job.”
Liam enjoys the variety his law career offers.
“I’ve been fortunate enough to act on some really large merger and acquisition transactions, and currently on some capital markets projects that are really exciting and challenging. But the most rewarding work recently has been helping a charity, Pollinator Paths, get up and running.”
An enjoyable experience
Having completed his Bachelor of Laws in 2016, Liam still fondly remembers his time at AUT.
“I chose AUT because it offered more opportunity for learning and participating in extracurricular activities. The small class sizes meant more time with lecturers, getting to understand the coursework. There was also the opportunity to participate in all of the legal competitions, and be involved in the university societies.”
In addition to his studies, he also found time to participate in the AUT Law Students’ Society and advocate for his fellow law students.
“In my final year I was elected as vice-president of the AUT Law Students’ Society and was also asked to chair the meetings between the various student representatives and faculty to tackle any issues on campus. I loved both roles as they gave me a chance to spend time problem solving practical issues and improving the university experience.”
Maintaining strong connections
While Liam graduated from AUT a few years ago, his career still sees him working closely with the university.
“Lowndes Jordan is a partner of CO.STARTERS, which is a programme run through AUT that gives entrepreneurs the knowledge and connections they need to turn their business idea into reality."
He enjoys sharing his knowledge with other students.
“I’ve recently taken a lead role in presenting to the CO.STARTERS students and helping them with some early stage legal advice. It’s such an awesome opportunity to be involved at the earliest stage of the business lifecycle and play a role in getting the businesses off the ground.”
