Turnaround and Reconstruction Services Intern, AlixPartners, New York
Bachelor of Business in Finance, Economics and Management

It’s a surreal feeling to be working in the New York financial district among some of the world’s leading firms, says Josephine Cane who is currently interning at AlixPartners in New York. She got the sought-after internship through the AUT Internz International Scholarship Programme.

“AlixPartners is a results-driven global consulting firm, which specialises in helping businesses successfully address their most critical and complex challenges such as turnaround and reconstruction, mergers and bankruptcy solutions.

“My role involves working alongside a team that engages with international companies facing critical and complex financial and operational distress. Due to the rigorous world of New York corporate finance, no two situations are ever the same, resulting in the need for decisive, informed and often urgent action to be taken discreetly and efficiently – something AlixPartners is renowned for.”

Valuable global opportunities
For Josephine, her time in New York isn’t the first international opportunity she has had thanks to AUT.

“In my second year at AUT, I spent a semester at Butler University in Indianapolis in the United States. I was thrilled to hear that the AUT Internz programme could provide me with an opportunity to go back after graduation.”

The internship at AlixPartners immediately caught Josephine’s eye.

“There were numerous finance internships offered through the AUT Internz programme, however the role at AlixPartners interested me the most as it’s within an industry that has little presence here in New Zealand. Firms like AlixPartners are what finance and economics students hear, learn and study about in many of the AUT lecture halls.”

Advice for other students
Josephine, who graduated at the end of 2018, has some great advice for other students.

“Be open and willing to take a different path to your peers and others within your classes.”

She would also highly recommend applying for the AUT Internz programme.

“The idea of applying and accepting a role overseas is a scary thought to many; however, your life will be changed just by being open to the opportunity.”
